Common Causes of Food and Beverage Recalls

Food recalls most commonly occur due to undeclared allergens, bacterial contamination (such as Salmonella or Listeria), foreign material contamination, labeling errors, and manufacturing or packaging defects.

Many recalls occur out of an abundance of caution when companies identify potential safety concerns. Recalls are typically voluntary but are conducted in coordination with FDA oversight. In certain cases, the FDA may request or mandate a recall if a company does not act promptly to remove unsafe products from the market.
