Revival Animal Health Recalls Canine Milk Replacers Due to Variable Vitamin D Levels
Revival Animal Health, LLC of Orange City, Iowa, has voluntarily recalled multiple lots of its Breeder’s Edge® Foster Care® Canine Milk Replacer and Shelter’s Choice® Canine Milk Replacer products because testing identified variable levels of vitamin D, including both low and elevated levels in some products.
Nationwide recall
The recall affects canine milk replacers sold nationwide through online channels and retail pet stores in a variety of package sizes, including resealable bags and 12-ounce jars. According to the company, consumers should immediately stop feeding the affected products to dogs. Elevated vitamin D intake in dogs can cause symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. At very high levels, vitamin D exposure may lead to serious health effects, including kidney dysfunction.
The company also indicated that low vitamin D levels were present in some product, a concern of particular importance in developing puppies because inadequate vitamin D can impair normal bone development. Revival Animal Health reported that two complaints of rickets had been received as of the recall announcement.
The recall was initiated following an investigation that determined that certain lots contained inconsistent vitamin D levels. The action is being taken with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Consumers who purchased affected product are advised to discontinue use immediately and contact the company regarding return and refund procedures.
Multiple product sizes affected
The recall includes multiple sizes and best-by dates for both product lines. Affected products include Shelter’s Choice Canine Milk Replacer in 1 lb., 3.5 lb., and 8 lb. sizes, as well as Breeder’s Edge Foster Care Canine Milk Replacer in 12 oz., 4.5 lb., 18 lb., and 20 lb. sizes. Best-by dates range from May 22, 2026, through February 5, 2028, depending on the specific product and package size.
This recall is a reminder that nutritional products for animals, especially products intended for neonatal or developing animals, can present significant health risks when critical nutrients fall outside expected ranges. In this case, the problem is not simply over-fortification. The reported variability in vitamin D levels suggests a broader product consistency concern, because both deficiency and excess can cause harm. For products designed to support growth and early development, formulation control and manufacturing consistency are especially important.
