Cardinal Health Recalls Alcohol Prep Pads Over Infection Risk Concerns

Cardinal Health has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of select lots of its Webcol™ Large Alcohol Prep Pads (70% isopropyl alcohol) after testing identified microbial contamination with Paenibacillus phoenicis. The recall extends to the consumer level and affects products distributed in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Japan between September 2025 and February 2026.

According to Cardinal Health, there is a reasonable probability that use of contaminated alcohol prep pads could result in local or systemic infections in vulnerable patients. Individuals with weakened immune systems, including patients undergoing chemotherapy or those with poorly controlled diabetes, may be at increased risk of developing serious infections such as bacteremia or central nervous system infections.

Webcol Alcohol Prep Pads are intended for external use and are commonly used to cleanse skin prior to injections, blood draws, and other medical procedures. Although the pads are not intended to be used on open wounds, contamination of products used for skin preparation can create opportunities for microorganisms to enter the body during invasive procedures.

The recalled products were distributed through healthcare facilities and other customers across multiple markets. Cardinal Health stated that affected customers were notified and instructed to review inventory, quarantine affected lots, notify downstream users, and return recall acknowledgment documentation.

Patients and healthcare providers are advised to discontinue use of affected products and follow Cardinal Health’s recall instructions.

Consumers who believe they may have experienced adverse effects associated with the recalled alcohol prep pads should contact their healthcare provider and report any adverse events through FDA’s MedWatch reporting system.

Why This Matters

Alcohol prep pads are widely used throughout healthcare settings and are generally considered low-risk products. However, contamination of products used to prepare skin prior to injections or other procedures can create significant risks for vulnerable patient populations.

This recall serves as a reminder that even simple healthcare products can become sources of patient harm when manufacturing or quality control failures introduce microbial contamination into the supply chain.

MDP Regulatory Intelligence Perspective

While alcohol prep pads are often viewed as routine healthcare supplies, this recall demonstrates the importance of robust manufacturing controls and microbiological quality assurance for products intended for patient contact.

The affected product is used in countless healthcare interactions every day, making contamination events particularly significant because of the large number of potential exposures. For quality and regulatory professionals, the recall highlights the continuing importance of contamination control, supplier oversight, complaint monitoring, and rapid field action processes when quality issues are identified.Read the Cardinal Health recall notice here.
